Captain sinks cruise ship as “publicity stunt”

Italians are known for their bravado, but this was just plain stupido. Francesco Schettino, captain of the Italian cruise ship Costa Concorida, was on the bridge with his new girlfriend when he decided to attempt to impress her with a “sail-past salute” which required the ship to tread into extremely shallow waters. Claiming he had done the route a few times before, Schettino turned off the alarms before attempting the maneuver. The huge 4229 passenger boat capsized and 32 people were killed. Schettino was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

BRICS summit gives Putin a chance to show Russia not isolated

The BRICS emerging economies will launch a development bank at a summit this week which President Vladimir Putin hopes will help reduce Western dominance of world financial institutions and show Moscow is not isolated.
