The Princess Theatre of Melbourne is one of its kind in Australia because of its architectural beauty. It is a memorial that holds huge fame, the theatre is listed by the National Trust of Australia, and it also made its own place in the Victorian Heritage Register. It was built in 1854 by the well-known energetic actor George Coppin. Coppin’s name was associated with many other different ventures also in the city, which includes his Iron Pot’s ownership with the fixing of gas lights into the well-known amphitheatre of Astley.
When you look at the location where the Princess Theatre is situated today, actually it is the second building. The first was Amphitheatre of Astley, which was also constructed in 1854. It was named after the beautiful Astley Royal Amphitheatre actually, it is located close to Westminster Bridge, London. Astley’s had a different structure along with a ring in center for entertainment performances related to riders, at one end there was a stage for dramatic activities as well. In 1857, renovation was done to the amphitheatre and the Princess theatre was also opened along with the inauguration of the Opera House.
You can notice a magnificent Victorian feel the theatre that was made and renovated by the best talents of artists and architects. When the building was completed it was known to have the first sliding kind of roof and ceiling in the world. The lighting of the stage was done flawlessly and it was pretty impressing. Over the time, the owners of the theatre changed, and every one of them have renovated the theatre and reopened it with some beautiful performances.
